At least 20 people have reportedly been killed after suspected herdsmen launched a deadly attack on Ojantele community along the Abuja–Otukpo road in Benue State.
The gunmen were said to have stormed the community on Friday, opening fire indiscriminately on residents and leaving several others missing.
Many Feared Dead
According to reports gathered from local sources, the attack caused panic and chaos in the area, with villagers fleeing into nearby bushes for safety.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Apa Local Government Area, Adams Ogwola, said authorities were still trying to determine the exact number of casualties.
“We cannot ascertain the exact number of casualties at the moment,” the council chairman said.
However, preliminary information suggests that more than 20 residents may have been killed, while several others remain unaccounted for.
Community in Fear
Residents of Ojantele and surrounding communities are said to be living in fear following the attack, which reportedly occurred near the busy Abuja–Otukpo highway, a major route connecting Benue to Nigeria’s capital.
Security agencies are yet to release an official statement as of the time of filing this report.
