Chairman of Odu’a Investment Company Limited and former Ogun State Commissioner, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, has declared that political leadership in Nigeria is a sacrifice rather than a privilege, warning that governance in the country is more demanding than many citizens assume.
Ashiru, who spoke during a recent interview, stressed that Nigerians often mistake leadership for glamour and wealth, without understanding the enormous burdens attached to public office.
“Ruling in this country is a sacrifice. People think it is glamour and money. But if I become governor tomorrow, everybody wants me at their party. It is not me they want, it is the office,” he said.
The technocrat, who served as commissioner in Ogun State for eight years, said Nigerian leaders are constantly faced with conflicting advice, mounting pressures, and overwhelming national challenges. He recalled that several past leaders admitted being stunned by the scale of problems confronting the country.
Speaking on his role as Chairman of Odu’a Investment Company, Ashiru disclosed that the conglomerate has transitioned into a global-standard holding company, recently earning an AA- rating from Augusto & Co.
He explained that the new rating allows the group to raise funds internationally without interference from the six Southwest governors.
Ashiru also reflected on his upbringing, revealing that his late father had over 20 wives and nearly 100 children, yet managed to instill peace and unity through discipline and education.
He described education as the greatest inheritance left behind, adding that he personally chose monogamy in contrast to his father’s polygamous life.
He further dismissed stereotypes against the Ijebu people, arguing that they are not defined by juju or stinginess but by prudence, accountability, and resilience.
The Odu’a boss said Nigeria’s history shows that every leader faces harsh criticism in office but is often remembered with more respect after leaving.
