The Federal Government has called on the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron, to adopt key reforms that will boost performance, accountability, and digital transformation within the institution.

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, made the appeal on Thursday at a two-day management retreat in Oron. Represented by Hajia Ibrahim Kalthum, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics in the ministry, Oyetola said the retreat focused on the implementation of the Performance Management System (PMS) and the Enterprise Content Management System (ECMS).

He explained that the reforms are part of efforts to strengthen the ministry’s agencies in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. According to him, the PMS is designed to align staff and departmental goals with national objectives, while the ECMS will streamline processes, digitize records, and promote efficiency, transparency, and faster decision-making.

“The performance management system is not merely about staff appraisals but about strategic execution. It ensures that goals flow seamlessly from the national level to institutions, departments, and ultimately to individual officers,” Oyetola said.

He stressed that the reforms would help the academy improve training outcomes, enhance global competitiveness, and deliver better services to cadets, seafarers, and stakeholders in the maritime industry.

The Minister also commended the Acting Rector of the academy, Dr. Kevin Okonna, for his dedication to implementing the federal government’s reforms.

Highlighting the academy’s contributions in 2024, Okonna noted that MAN trained 4,775 seafarers and dockworkers, increased staff access to laptops and desktops, and expanded capacity-building programmes to improve expertise and standards. He assured that the retreat would further prepare the academy’s management to deliver on its 2025 priorities in line with presidential directives.
