Authorities have shut down an illegal quarry site operating in the Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, with 13 suspects arrested for allegedly operating without a valid license.

The enforcement was carried out by the Mining Marshals, a special security unit of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), established to safeguard mining sites across the country. The unit, formed under the directive of the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, is part of a broader effort to sanitize the mining sector and tackle economic sabotage.

Commander of the Mining Marshals, ACC Attah Onoja, confirmed the operation, stating that the suspects were found to be working on a quarry lease that belonged to a licensed operator, in violation of legal and regulatory frameworks. The illegal activities had reportedly continued for over seven months.

“This operation underscores our zero tolerance for illegality in the mining sector. No individual or company will be allowed to exploit mineral resources without due process,” Onoja said.

He warned operators across the country to comply with legal and environmental standards or face strict enforcement actions. According to him, the Mining Marshals remain committed to investigating and prosecuting violators, regardless of how remote or concealed their operations may be.

Onoja added that the crackdown is part of efforts to restore transparency, protect legitimate investors, and prevent the loss of national revenue to illegal mining. The arrested suspects are currently in custody and will be charged once investigations are concluded.
