Nigeria Has Suffered from Lousy Leaders for Too Long – Emir Sanusi
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has lamented Nigeria’s leadership crisis, declaring that the country has been unfortunate with “lousy leaders” for many years.
Speaking on Saturday at the second Kano International Poetry Festival (KAPFEST), Sanusi said Nigeria’s problems are rooted in poor leadership, which has repeatedly failed to deliver good governance.
According to the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Nigeria would have been bankrupt if the federal government had not removed fuel subsidy. He stressed that no nation can progress without visionary leadership.
“You rise and fall with the quality of your leadership, and Nigeria has had lousy leadership for a long time,” Sanusi said.
“In most parts of this country, you look at the people leading and ask, oh God, how did we end up here? You see it every day in the news and the kind of pettiness that dominates our national debates.”
Sanusi added that until Nigerians begin to prioritize the character and competence of leaders they elect, the country would continue to lag behind.
Youths Must Take Over
The Emir challenged young Nigerians to rise and take over political leadership from the old guard who, according to him, have mismanaged the country for decades.
“With determination, the youths can retire these old politicians and take charge of their future,” he said.
Sanusi has consistently spoken on Nigeria’s governance challenges, urging reforms in both politics and economic management. His latest remarks have once again stirred debates on the urgent need for generational change in the country’s leadership
