The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone E (North-East) has cried out over the continued loss of students through road accidents in the zone due to bad roads.
NANS described major roads linking the states in the country’s North-East as death traps.
The students body therefore appealed to the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to return to site and complete the abandoned road projects in the North-East zone.
Addressing a press conference in Yola, the Coordinator of NANS Zone-E, Umar Afkawa, noted that several roads in the region had claimed the lives of students and other road users in the zone.
Afkawa therefore urged the federal government to look into the plight of the zone that was plagued by the Boko Haram terrorists.
“We have gathered here today to address a pressing issue that has been neglected for far too long; the deplorable state of infrastructure in our region.
“The poor state of our roads has exacerbated the challenges we faced, making it difficult to access education, healthcare and other essential services and also loss of lives of our students recently in Borno State,” Afkawa said.
He, accordingly accused the federal government of failing to deliver good roads to Nigerians, adding that NANS had no choice but to issue a one-week ultimatum for resumption to work.
“We demand that the federal government and contractors take immediate action to: (i), address the zone on the status quo of projects before 13th January, 2025; (ii), complete all ongoing road projects in the North-East region within the next six months.
“Failure to comply with our demand will result in series of protests across the region. We will not hesitate to take our grievances to the streets and ensure our voices are heard,” Afkawa vowed.
