The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has officially launched a Federal Task Force dedicated to combating the widespread issue of counterfeit medicines and unwholesome processed foods across Nigeria.

Held in Abuja, the inauguration was hailed as a pivotal moment in the campaign against substandard products that jeopardise public health and undermine confidence in the healthcare system.

At the event, NAFDAC Director General, Professor Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, described the initiative as a “rallying point” for coordinated national action.

She stressed that the surge in fake drugs and unsafe food items presents an urgent threat demanding “immediate and steadfast attention.”

The task force, established under Cap C 34, unites government bodies, law enforcement agencies, and industry representatives to mount a concerted effort against this dangerous trade.

Professor Adeyeye outlined recent enforcement operations that underscored the problem’s scale and urgency.

Between February and March 2025, coordinated raids targeting major drug markets in Onitsha and Ariaria resulted in the seizure and destruction of counterfeit and substandard products filling over 100 trucks, with an estimated value exceeding N1 trillion.

She noted that multiple illegal traders were apprehended, alongside the confiscation of numerous unregistered medicines and contaminated food products.

“These measures not only removed harmful goods from the market but also conveyed a firm message that Nigeria remains committed to safeguarding its citizens,” the Director General remarked.

She added that lives are at risk daily, and any delay in addressing the menace intensifies the dangers faced by the public.

NAFDAC’s approach prioritises enhanced enforcement, improved surveillance, and fostering robust partnerships with industry leaders and the general public.

Plans include launching targeted awareness campaigns and utilising advanced technology to outpace counterfeiters.

While affirming NAFDAC’s determination to spearhead the effort, Professor Adeyeye called on all relevant parties to contribute their expertise, resources, and dedication.

“Only through a united front involving government, industry, consumers, and partners can this menace be effectively confronted,” she stated.

The Director General extended appreciation to the Honourable Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare and all involved stakeholders, expressing confidence that the task force will significantly impact Nigeria’s protracted struggle against fake drugs and unsafe food products.

The inauguration signals the start of a new chapter in regulatory enforcement aimed at restoring public trust and ensuring a healthier, safer Nigeria.
