I Was There: Ike Abonyi Debunks Adeyanju’s Bribery Allegation Against Peter Obi

Veteran journalist and political analyst, Ike Abonyi, has dismissed claims by activist Deji Adeyanju that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, attempted to bribe him during the last election campaign.

Abonyi, who disclosed that he personally arranged and attended the meeting between Adeyanju and Obi, said there was no exchange of money nor any form of inducement.

“I was there… no money was offered. I arranged the meeting and sat through the discussions. Nothing like bribery happened,” Abonyi stated.

His rebuttal directly challenges Adeyanju’s account, which resurfaced this week after the activist claimed he was handed an envelope during the meeting but rejected it.

Abonyi emphasized that Obi’s political style has always been defined by transparency and prudence, insisting that the bribery allegation was not only false but a deliberate attempt to smear the former governor’s image.

The controversy has sparked heated debates across social media and political circles, with many observers urging caution against what they describe as a campaign of distraction aimed at Obi’s growing influence

While Adeyanju has continued to stand by his allegation, Abonyi’s firsthand testimony—given his role in brokering the meeting—casts serious doubt on the credibility of the claim.
