Plateau Killings: Berom Youths Raises Alarm Over Alleged Plot to Declare Arrested Suspect Mentally Unstable

The Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) has accused the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) of allegedly plotting to shield a suspect arrested in connection with the recent attack on Pwomol village in Plateau State.

The attack, which occurred on April 5 in Heipang District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, left at least two persons dead and properties destroyed. The assailants are suspected to be armed Fulani militia.

According to reports, one of the alleged attackers, identified as Suleiman, was apprehended by a local vigilante group and subsequently handed over to security operatives for further investigation.

However, BYM, in a statement issued by its National President, Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, alleged that MACBAN is making moves to secure the suspect’s release by presenting a questionable medical report.

The group claimed it received credible intelligence suggesting that efforts are underway to obtain a medical certificate declaring the suspect mentally unstable, a move allegedly aimed at influencing authorities to release him.

“The plan is to present the medical certificate to security authorities as grounds to pressure for his release or face legal action,” Mwantiri stated.

He described the alleged move as a calculated attempt to obstruct justice and shield an individual linked to a deadly attack.

BYM further questioned the credibility of such a claim, noting that the suspect had reportedly provided detailed information about the attack—raising doubts about any sudden declaration of mental instability.

“It is both illogical and unacceptable that someone who gave coherent details about the incident is suddenly being described as mentally unstable,” the statement added.

The association warned that any attempt to manipulate the investigation process would not only undermine justice but also deepen suspicions about vested interests working to frustrate accountability in Plateau’s recurring violence.

BYM also called on security agencies, including Operation Enduring Peace, to thoroughly investigate any medical claims presented in the case and ensure that those responsible for fabricating evidence are treated as accomplices.

Why This Matters

The allegation introduces a new dimension to the Plateau crisis—raising concerns about possible interference in security investigations and the integrity of the justice process in handling violent attacks.
