The Lagos State Police Command has foiled plans to inaugurate a purported N1.5 billion “Palace of Obi of Lagos State” and arrested four men accused of organising the unlawful event.
The suspects, led by 65-year-old Chibuike Azubike from Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom in Imo State, were taken into custody at the command headquarters in Ikeja. Others arrested include Chief Chibuzor Ani, 57, Chief Martins Nwaodika, 65, and Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi, 41.
According to police, the group intended to hold an “illegal unveiling ceremony” on Saturday, 13 September 2025, at Apple Hall in Amuwo Odofin. Security operatives sealed the venue to prevent the event from taking place.
Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh said tactical teams, including the Eko Strike Force, were deployed to maintain order. He confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that the suspects will be prosecuted once inquiries are concluded.
Jimoh cautioned members of the public against falling prey to individuals who manipulate cultural and traditional institutions for personal benefit, stressing that such conduct is unlawful and a potential trigger for unrest.
This is not the first attempt of its kind in Lagos. In April 2023, police arrested Frederick Nwajagu, the self-styled Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate, for unlawfully presenting himself as a titled chief.
