The crisis rocking Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is far from over. Fresh details have emerged about the conditions tied to the reinstatement of the embattled National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, whose position has been a flashpoint of internal wrangling.
Recall that Senator Anyanwu, who was the 2023 PDP’s governorship candidate in Imo State, was suspended from his role as National Secretary amid allegations of anti-party activities and gross misconduct. While his supporters have described the action as politically motivated, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) insists it followed due process.

The Conditions for Reinstatement
According to credible party insiders who spoke on condition of anonymity, the following stringent conditions have been tabled before Anyanwu to pave the way for his return:
- Written Commitment to Withdraw All Legal Suits
He must formally withdraw all court cases instituted against the party leadership within a specified timeframe to demonstrate readiness for reconciliation. - Public Declaration of Loyalty
A public statement affirming his loyalty to the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the PDP Constitution is mandatory. - Non-Interference in State Chapters
Anyanwu is required to sign an undertaking that he will refrain from meddling in the affairs of the Imo State PDP chapter to prevent further division. - Acceptance of a Supervisory Committee
The NWC will appoint a three-member committee to monitor his activities for six months to ensure strict compliance with party directives. - Engagement with Elders’ Forum
He must personally appear before the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) Elders’ Forum to tender an apology and present his commitment to peace.
Sources say these conditions were agreed upon after marathon meetings involving top party stakeholders, including governors, former ministers, and members of the BoT.
Mixed Reactions Trail the Decision
Reactions to the proposed terms have been mixed. While some PDP faithful believe it is a fair roadmap to restore harmony, others argue it amounts to political witch-hunting and an attempt to weaken Anyanwu’s influence in the South-East.
A party chieftain told reporters:
“These conditions are the only way to guarantee stability. If he wants to come back, he must prove that he will respect the collective decisions of the party.”
However, a loyalist of the embattled Secretary countered: “This is a deliberate move to humiliate him and send a warning to other independent-minded leaders.”

What Lies Ahead?
As the PDP prepares for future elections and tries to rebuild public confidence, how the leadership handles this internal dispute could determine whether the party emerges stronger or slides deeper into crisis.
