The Nigerian military has recorded a major breakthrough in the fight against banditry following a coordinated operation that dealt a heavy blow to notorious warlord Ado Alieru’s network in Zamfara State.

Inside the Deadly Military Operation

Troops under Operation Fansan Yamma launched a decisive assault on bandits’ hideouts located in the Munhayi forest in Tsafe Local Government Area.

The operation, which took place on Saturday, targeted one of the most dangerous enclaves controlled by Ado Alieru.

According to military sources, the offensive combined ground forces and precision airstrikes, overwhelming the bandits despite fierce resistance.

Ado Alieru’s Son Among Those Killed

In what security analysts describe as a significant tactical victory, the operation led to the killing of Kachalla Iliya Sarki, the biological son of Ado Alieru and a feared commander.

He was reportedly responsible for multiple cases of kidnappings, cattle rustling, cross-border bandit operations across Zamfara and neighboring states

The Nigerian Armed Forces disclosed that at least 65 bandits were neutralized during the confrontation.

Bandits Mobilized 300 Fighters – Still Overpowered

Despite mobilizing about 300 armed fighters on motorcycles, including reinforcements from allied gangs, the bandits were unable to withstand the military’s firepower.

A statement from the Armed Forces noted that:
The bandits were overwhelmed by superior tactics and air support, their command structure suffered a serious disruption

Casualties  recorded Among Vigilantes

While the operation was largely successful, it came at a cost. At least seven vigilantes who supported the troops lost their lives during the intense battle.

Ado Alieru Reportedly on the Run

Following the assault, Ado Alieru is believed to have fled to Yankuzu town, with troops currently in pursuit to dismantle the remaining elements of his network.

What This Means for Security in the North-West

Security experts believe the elimination of key commanders like Iliya Sarki could weaken operational coordination among bandits, reduce the frequency of attacks in affected communities and boost morale among security forces

However, concerns remain about possible retaliatory attacks as troops intensify operations across the region.

Final Thoughts

This latest military success signals a renewed push by Nigerian forces to reclaim territories long dominated by bandits.

But as history has shown, sustained pressure—not isolated victories—will determine whether lasting peace can be achieved in Zamfara and beyond.
