Surprise as Suspended Rivers State Governor, Fubura, Gets New Appointment

Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubura, has unexpectedly found his name on a fresh list of appointments released by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), despite still being under suspension.

Fubura, who was suspended on March 18, 2025, under an emergency rule declared by President Bola Tinubu, remains suspended until September 17, 2025. However, in a surprising twist, the PDP has appointed him as a member of the committee set up to prepare for its upcoming national convention.

PDP Names Convention Committee Members

According to the party, the move follows resolutions adopted at its last National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
The Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has been named chairman of the 1,100-member convention committee, while Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, will serve as deputy chairman. Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has been appointed secretary of the committee.

The elective national convention is scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, from November 15 to 16, 2025.

Other Big Names on the List

The list also includes prominent PDP leaders such as:

Former Vice President, Namadi Sambo

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde

PDP Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum

PDP Board of Trustees Chairman, Adolphus Wabara

Zoning Committee Already in Place

This comes just a week after the PDP announced the formation of a 44-member zoning committee, headed by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, with Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal as deputy chairman.

The zoning committee is expected to recommend how key party positions, including the national chairmanship, will be shared between the North and South.

In line with PDP’s long-standing rotation principle, if the chairmanship is zoned to the North, the presidential candidate will emerge from the South, and vice versa.

The development is likely to shape not just the party’s internal politics, but also the 2027 presidential race, as the PDP begins early preparations to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
