Residents overpower alleged Vikings cult member after robbery attempt in Apata area of Plateau State.
A suspected cultist and alleged notorious phone snatcher identified simply as Gucho has been burnt to death by an angry mob in the Apata area of Jos, Plateau State.
According to eyewitness accounts circulating on social media, the incident occurred on Wednesday after the suspect allegedly robbed residents of their mobile phones at gunpoint.
Sources said the suspect, who was reportedly a member of the Vikings (DNKI) cult group, attempted to escape after the robbery. During the chase, he allegedly fired several shots into the air in a bid to scare off residents.
However, locals reportedly noticed that the suspect was struggling with his firearm while trying to flee the scene.
Residents then pursued him, overpowered him, and subsequently set him ablaze.
Further reports claim that the deceased had earlier been mentioned on local security alert platforms in 2024 over alleged involvement in criminal activities.
He was also said to be the elder brother of another suspected cultist identified as Ugovin, believed to be a member of the Aye (NBM) confraternity, who was reportedly arrested in May 2025 over alleged shop robbery incidents.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies in Plateau State are yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
The development has again raised concerns about mob justice and rising criminal activities in parts of Jos, with residents calling for improved policing and security response in affected communities.
