Why governors can’t abuse state police

Former Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, PACAC, Prof. Itse Sagay, SAN, has revealed why state governors would find it difficult to abuse the state police if created.

In a conversation on Arise News on Friday morning, the former presidential adviser said that any governor who tries to abuse the system would be met with stiff resistance from civil society organisations and Nigerians.

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday told the Senate to begin the conversation around constitution amendment to accommodate the state police in order to add momentum to the fight against insecurity.

“The state police should be under the control, overall control of the state governor. That is necessary because he is the chief security officer of the state,” Sagay said.

“And I believe that the Nigerian civil society is so strong now that any abuse of powers by state governors will be met with fierce challenges.

“I’m not worried about that at all. I know there will be some abuse, knowing the nature of Nigerian politicians, but I think they can be checkmated.

“They can be exposed and embarrassed, and also can be taken to court if they abuse the powers that they have under the state police system.”
