Atiku and Amaechi Attract Crowd at Filling Station
African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Rotimi Amaechi, turned an ordinary stop for fuel into a lively public exchange on Saturday.
The pair pulled into a filling station to refuel their vehicle. Within minutes, word of their presence spread and a crowd quickly gathered around the car. Amaechi was at the wheel while Atiku sat in the front passenger seat.
Supporters pressed closer, with some calling on Amaechi to step out and greet them. The conversation soon turned to the high cost of petrol and Atiku’s earlier campaign pledge on the fuel subsidy.
Amaechi told the gathering that an Atiku administration would work to lower the cost of producing fuel so pump prices could fall. “We will reduce the cost of producing fuel. We will bring down the production cost, and this will make the price of petrol come down,” he said.
Atiku then stepped out of the vehicle, waved to the cheering crowd, and responded in Hausa to the calls about the subsidy: “Zan dawo da tallafi insha Allahu” — “I will bring back the fuel subsidy, by God’s grace.”
After the brief interaction, Amaechi returned to the driver’s seat and the two drove away.
Headlineswave reports that the short stop underscored public concern over fuel prices and the attention the ADC ticket continues to draw over the subsidy debate
