Kwankwaso’s Epic Jos Outing Raises the Bar as He Declares Obi Alliance a ‘Ticket of Unity’

NDC vice-presidential candidate promises people-centred leadership, vows to tackle hunger, unemployment and insecurity as Obi sends regards to Plateau supporters.

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has declared his partnership with Peter Obi under the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) a “ticket of unity”, promising a leadership focused on ordinary Nigerians as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso made the declaration on Friday at the much-publicised Middle Belt town hall meeting held at Crispan Hotel, Jos, where he outlined the alliance’s commitment to tackling hunger, unemployment, insecurity and poverty.

However, Obi was absent from the gathering due to unforeseen circumstances.
Kwankwaso conveyed Obi’s regards to the people of Plateau State and his appreciation for the massive support he received in the state during the 2023 presidential election.

He also indicated that plans would be made for an enlarged rally in Jos, where Obi would have another opportunity to engage directly with supporters as the 2027 elections draw closer.

Despite Obi’s absence, the meeting provided Kwankwaso with a platform to explain the partnership and appeal for support across regional and political divides.

‘This Is a Ticket of Unity’

Describing the alliance as a partnership built on shared values, Kwankwaso said he and Obi were united by their commitment to the interests of ordinary Nigerians rather than those of political elites.

“We agreed that this ticket, as it stands now, is a ticket of unity: unity in Plateau, unity in Northern Nigeria, unity in Southern Nigeria, and unity in Nigeria,” he said.

He argued that the partnership offered an opportunity to overcome ethnic, religious and regional divisions and build a country where citizens could enjoy security, economic opportunity and responsible leadership.

Tackling Hunger, Unemployment and Insecurity

Kwankwaso identified insecurity, poverty and illiteracy as major challenges the alliance intends to confront, pledging to prioritise agriculture and education.

“Together, we are going to fight insecurity, poverty and illiteracy, and invest in agriculture and education,” he declared.

The promises come as many Nigerian households struggle with rising food prices, declining purchasing power and limited employment opportunities.

For Plateau State, where farming remains a major source of livelihood, improved agricultural productivity and better security could have significant implications for rural communities affected by violence and economic hardship.

The alliance will, however, need to provide detailed policies and practical implementation plans to demonstrate how its promises would translate into measurable improvements.

Kwankwaso Praises Obi’s Record

Kwankwaso also highlighted Obi’s eight-year tenure as governor of Anambra State, presenting his experience in public office as part of the foundation of their partnership.

Obi governed Anambra from 2006 to 2014 and has built much of his political appeal around accountability, prudent management of public resources and investment in human development.

Kwankwaso further drew on his own experience, including his tenure as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, to underscore the importance of effective leadership in addressing the country’s security challenges.

He maintained that he and Obi shared similar ideas and a common interest in improving the lives of Nigerians.

Why Plateau Matters Ahead of 2027

Plateau State was among the states where Obi attracted significant support in the 2023 presidential election. His supporters’ enthusiasm made the state an important constituency for his political movement.

The proposed enlarged rally would offer an opportunity to reconnect with that support base and bring together a wider coalition of political stakeholders and supporters.

For the NDC alliance, the challenge ahead is to turn its message of unity into a convincing programme for addressing insecurity, unemployment, food affordability and the wider economic difficulties confronting Nigerians.

The Headlineswave Take

Kwankwaso’s Jos appearance reinforced the alliance’s central message: that Nigeria needs leadership focused on the welfare of ordinary citizens.

Obi’s absence was a notable development at a meeting many supporters had anticipated, but the message conveyed on his behalf, alongside the prospect of an enlarged rally, signals an intention to sustain engagement with Plateau State.

As the 2027 elections approach, the alliance will need to match its political appeal with credible policies and clear answers to the country’s most pressing challenges.
