Peter Obi’s Alleged Neck Injury
A viral social media claim that former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, suffered a neck injury in a gym accident and was subsequently hospitalised abroad is false.
The claim, which circulated on social media on Sunday, November 1, 2026, was accompanied by a photograph purportedly showing Obi wearing a neck brace while receiving medical attention in a hospital.
However, investigations by fact-checking organisation FactWatch Nigeria found that the photograph was artificially generated and that the accompanying claim was misleading.
How the Rumour Started
The rumour gained traction after some social media users shared the purported hospital photograph, claiming that Obi had broken his neck while exercising on a gym treadmill.
Some posts further alleged that the former Anambra governor had travelled outside Nigeria for medical treatment.
The claims attracted considerable attention, particularly among supporters and opponents of the politician, ahead of the 2027 general election.
What the Investigation Revealed
In its November 1 investigation, FactWatch Nigeria examined the viral photograph using image-forensic analysis and AI-detection tools, including DeepAI and ZeroGPT.
The organisation reported that its findings indicated that the photograph was AI-generated.
It also observed unnatural features in the image and found no announcement on Obi’s official social media platforms confirming the alleged accident or hospitalisation.
FactWatch further noted that no credible Nigerian news organisation had reported the alleged hospital admission as of November 1.

Obi’s Spokesman Reacts
The PUNCH newspaper subsequently contacted Obi’s spokesman, Idris Zekeri, who dismissed the report as completely false.
According to a November 2 report by The PUNCH, Zekeri said he was with Obi at about 7 a.m. on Sunday before the former governor boarded an international flight for an engagement abroad.
He insisted that Obi had neither suffered a gym accident nor broken his neck.
“There is zero iota of truth in that rumour. No such thing happened,” the spokesman was quoted as saying.
He also described the circulating photographs as doctored fabrications and maintained that Obi was in good health.
Verdict: FALSE
Based on the findings of FactWatch Nigeria’s image investigation and the subsequent denial by Peter Obi’s spokesman, the claim that the NDC presidential candidate broke his neck in a gym accident and was hospitalised abroad is FALSE.
The viral hospital photograph was identified as AI-generated, while no credible evidence has emerged to establish that the alleged accident occurred.
This report is based on FactWatch Nigeria’s fact-check published on November 1, 2026, and a subsequent report by The PUNCH newspaper published on November 2, 2026.
