Former President Goodluck Jonathan is set to be screened on Tuesday by the Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party as the sole presidential aspirant ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to reports, the screening panel will include former Vice President Namadi Sambo, former Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang, and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Tom Ikimi, among other senior party figures.
The development comes days after the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, confirmed that Jonathan had successfully registered during the party’s fresh digital membership registration exercise directed by INEC.
Meanwhile, the faction backed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde also announced plans to screen hundreds of aspirants contesting for various elective offices.
According to the party, 748 House of Representatives aspirants, 198 senatorial aspirants, 112 governorship aspirants, and 2,122 State House of Assembly aspirants will undergo screening nationwide beginning Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
In a statement shared on the party’s official Facebook page on Sunday, the PDP disclosed that one presidential aspirant would equally appear before the screening committee.
“The screening exercise will take place nationwide on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 10:00,” the statement read.
Political observers say Jonathan’s possible return to the presidential race could reshape Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of 2027, especially as internal divisions continue to trail the PDP’s multiple factions.
