The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan (UI) branch, on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest, urging the Federal Government to honour its longstanding agreement with the union.
Led by the branch chairperson, Dr. Aderemi Afolabi, members of the union marched across the campus carrying banners condemning the non-implementation of the 2009 agreement.
Afolabi said the protest served as a warning ahead of the government’s scheduled meeting with the union on August 28. He stressed that the Federal Government must end what he described as “delay tactics” and implement the Alhaji Yayale Ahmed Report submitted in February 2025.
According to him, the report encapsulates all contentious issues and reflects a consensus with the union, yet government inaction has left members increasingly frustrated.
“Our protest is to send a clear message to the government that we are tired of being pushed around. The so-called ‘keep them talking’ strategy has only deepened our frustration. Members are no longer willing to be dragged along endlessly without tangible results,” Afolabi said.
The protest, which began at the Faculty of Arts, saw scores of lecturers chanting solidarity songs as they marched across the UI campus. It comes a day after the ASUU Ibadan Zone warned of possible industrial action if the government fails to meet its demands.
