Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kano State have arrested six young men suspected of vandalising and stealing electricity infrastructure in various parts of the state.

The arrests were made during a midnight operation in the Hayin Da’e area of Hotoro, located in Tarauni Local Government Area. The operation followed a tip-off from local vigilante groups who raised the alarm after noticing suspicious activity.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the NSCDC Public Relations Officer in Kano, SC Ibrahim Idris Abdullahi, the suspects were found in possession of transformer cables believed to have been unlawfully removed from power installations.

The statement noted that preliminary investigations conducted by the Corps suggest the suspects had been involved in a pattern of criminal activity across Hayin Da’e, Farawa Kwanar Yashi, and the Hotoro eastern bypass. These areas have reportedly suffered frequent incidents of burglary, theft, and damage to public electricity facilities.

The suspects have been identified as Muhammad Yusuf (18), Muhd Sani Adamu (19), Umar Musa (19), Ahmed Auwal (20), Muhd Yusuf (28), and Usman Ali (19). Most of them are believed to reside within the affected communities, making their activities particularly disruptive for local residents.

The NSCDC confirmed that all six suspects have made confessional statements and are cooperating with investigators. Further efforts are underway to apprehend other individuals suspected to be connected to the crimes.

Upon the conclusion of investigations, the suspects will face prosecution in accordance with the law, the Corps stated.

Meanwhile, the Kano State NSCDC Commandant, Shafi’u Abdulmumini, has ordered increased patrols and strengthened surveillance across the state. He emphasised the need for sustained vigilance to deter acts of vandalism and protect critical infrastructure from further attacks.
