Lagos: Police arrest suspect behind Allen Avenue gold jewellery attack

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested John Samuel, a notorious armed robbery kingpin, hired assassin and ex-convict, for masterminding the 18 August 2025 daylight attack on a businessman at Allen Avenue, Ikeja.

The suspect, aged 28 and from Akwa Ibom State, was tracked and apprehended at his Epe hideout on 19 September 2025 at about 1400hrs by police operatives.

He had only recently been released from prison after serving six years for armed robbery.

This was contained in a statement signed by DSP Babaseyi B. Oluseyi, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, for the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohudare Jimoh.

The statement reads: “On 18/08/2025, the suspect fired and wounded a businessman, Gbenga Obama, and robbed him of an expensive gold necklace and other valuables in broad daylight at Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue, Ikeja. CCTV footage of the incident clearly captured the suspect when he fired at the victim with an English pistol before dispossessing him of his gold necklace jewellery while his accomplice waited on a motorcycle for their escape.

“The victim, who sustained serious gunshot wounds during the attack, has since been treated and discharged. The suspect confessed to selling the stolen jewellery for N4 million, far below its actual value.”

The police further disclosed that John Samuel, described as vicious and notorious, had resumed violent crimes shortly after his release from prison. He is infamous for shooting victims before dispossessing them of valuables, leaving a trail of injured survivors.

Commissioner of Police, CP Jimoh, praised the gallantry and commitment of the operatives who carried out the operation, assuring residents that the Command is intensifying efforts to apprehend other gang members and prosecute them.

The statement reaffirmed that Lagos has no hiding place for criminals, as the police remain committed to the safety and protection of all residents.
