The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has stated that enhanced collaboration with the Taraba State Judiciary will be pivotal in curbing financial crimes in the state.
The acting Zonal Director of the Makurdi Zonal Directorate of the EFCC, Effa Okim, disclosed this on Thursday during a courtesy visit to the Chief Judge of Taraba State, Justice Joel Agya, in Jalingo.
Okim, an Assistant Commander of the EFCC, stressed the importance of reinforcing synergy between the commission and the judiciary to eradicate corruption and restore public confidence in governance.
He commended the Taraba State Judiciary for its continued support in combating financial crimes, emphasising that sustained collaboration is essential for achieving meaningful results.
“Synergy between the EFCC and the judiciary can help restore the value of our nation state. The way and manner people take away monies meant for development with impunity is worrisome,” he said.
Okim decried the diversion of public funds for personal and political interests, noting that such practices deny citizens access to resources intended for national development.
“We must collaborate to take criminals out of our system. Our interest is not bigger than the state. We cannot continue to be pitiable in the eyes of the globe; we must fight to stop corruption, even if it means sending offenders to jail,” he added.
In response, Justice Agya described the EFCC as a key institution within Nigeria’s law enforcement and accountability framework.
According to him, the judiciary, particularly at the state level, remains a foundational pillar in upholding the rule of law, ensuring justice, and safeguarding the integrity of public institutions.
“The Taraba State Judiciary recognises itself as a key stakeholder in the fight against economic and financial crimes. The effectiveness of any anti-corruption framework depends significantly on the synergy between investigative bodies like the EFCC and the courts that adjudicate their matters,” Agya said.
He noted that the visit provided an opportunity to deepen existing cooperation, review areas of mutual interest, and reaffirm commitment to transparency and accountability.
Agya assured the EFCC of the judiciary’s unwavering support, pledging continued collaboration through capacity building, information sharing, and strict adherence to due process.
He expressed optimism that strengthened institutional ties between the two bodies would advance the cause of justice in Taraba State and across Nigeria.
