Pregnant Woman Carrying Twins Dies in Jos After Driver Allegedly Fleeing VIO Operatives
A tragic road accident in Jos, Plateau State, has claimed the life of a heavily pregnant woman identified as Ruth Nen Maurice, who was reportedly expecting twins.
According to reports, the incident happened on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, in the Jos city centre when a driver allegedly attempting to evade officials of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) lost control and struck the woman.
Eyewitnesses said the deceased was standing by the roadside waiting to board a vehicle to the hospital for an antenatal appointment when the speeding vehicle hit her.
A friend of the deceased, Ewan Boss Julz Odumu, confirmed the incident in a Facebook post on Wednesday, describing the development as heartbreaking and avoidable.
He wrote that Ruth was close to delivery before the accident abruptly ended her life and that of her unborn twins.
“A mother who was preparing to welcome twins back home never made it alive. Her unborn babies never got the chance to cry, breathe, or see this world because of somebody’s reckless decision,” he reportedly stated.
The spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, DSP Alfred Alabo, also confirmed the incident, stating that the driver involved had been arrested.
According to the police, investigations are ongoing, while the suspect is expected to be charged to court after the conclusion of the investigation.
The incident has sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians questioning the conduct of road enforcement operations and the dangers posed by reckless driving during attempts to evade arrest.
This report is based on available eyewitness accounts and police confirmation as investigations continue.
