Former presidential candidate and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential aspirant, Peter Obi, has declared that Nigerians must ensure their votes count in the 2027 general elections, warning that anyone attempting to undermine the electoral process would be held accountable.

Obi made the remarks during the NDC Aspirants’ Dinner held in Abuja, where he addressed party members, aspirants, and supporters on the future of Nigeria and the need for urgent national reforms.

Speaking passionately at the gathering, Obi said Nigeria must become a country that works for every citizen through accountable leadership, job creation, credible elections, and responsible governance.

“Let’s for once build a nation. Let’s for once build a place where Nigerians will say they have a country,” Obi stated.

The former Anambra State governor lamented the worsening economic and food situation in Nigeria, while referencing Ukraine’s support to Nigeria despite being at war.

“Ukraine is at war, yet Ukraine gave Nigeria grain to fight hunger,” he said, stressing that Nigeria has enough land and resources to solve its food crisis if properly managed.

Obi argued that Northern Nigeria alone has enough landmass and agricultural potential comparable to several countries currently feeding their populations successfully.

“We must change this country because it is a corrupting country,” he stated.

“It is a country that must work for all of us. It is a country that must give jobs to every Nigerian.”

He also praised Nigerian youths for their energy, resilience, and commitment to national transformation, urging them not to give up on the democratic process.

In one of the strongest moments of his speech, Obi warned against election rigging and manipulation ahead of the 2027 polls.

“It is no longer going to be business as usual. Let us not be intimidated by threats to rig elections. This time, our votes will count,” Obi declared.

He further warned:

“If our votes do not count, those who refuse to count them will themselves be counted.”

The statement echoes an earlier position Obi shared publicly in February 2026, where he insisted that Nigerians must remain vigilant during elections and ensure proper counting and transmission of results.

Obi concluded by urging Nigerians not to normalize bad governance, insisting that leaders must be held accountable for the nation’s current hardship.

“Because we cannot continue like this. We have a country and this country must work. The people can no longer take Nigerians for granted,” he said.
