A fresh policy statement issued by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has generated widespread discussion within political circles, with many observers interpreting parts of the document as an attempt to clearly define the relationship between the party and independent support groups, including the Obidient Movement.
The statement, released by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, followed the resolutions reached at the party’s second National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on June 7, 2026.
At the heart of the resolutions is the principle of party supremacy, which the NDC says will guide its growth as a political institution.
According to the statement, governments elected on the platform of the party will be expected to consult party structures on key policies, programmes, and appointments, except for personal staff appointments.
The party stressed that members must place party interests above individual ambitions and remain committed to collective goals.
NDC Rejects Personality Cult Politics
The party also emphasized that it is being built as a lasting political institution rather than a platform centered on any individual politician or political movement.
In one of the most discussed sections of the statement, the NDC declared that it would not operate as a personality-driven organization, special-purpose vehicle, or temporary political arrangement designed for a single election cycle.
Political observers have linked this position to ongoing conversations surrounding the integration of influential political support groups into the party structure.
Affiliated Groups to Operate Within Party Framework
The NDC further announced that all affiliated groups and non-governmental organizations associated with the party must function under its guidance and authority.
According to the resolution, such groups should not operate independently or establish parallel structures outside the party’s official framework.
This provision has triggered debate among supporters and critics alike, with some interpreting it as a direct message to political movements that have developed strong identities outside traditional party structures.
New Measures on Accountability and Conduct
As part of its institutional reforms, the party revealed plans to introduce a comprehensive code of conduct for party officials and candidates.
A committee headed by the National Legal Adviser has been tasked with developing the framework and enforcement guidelines.
The NEC also approved the establishment of a National Reconciliation Committee aimed at addressing grievances among members and promoting internal unity.
Campaign Funding Under Greater Scrutiny
Another major aspect of the resolutions focuses on financial transparency.
The party announced stricter accountability measures for all officers and candidates handling party resources.
Under the new framework, campaign donations and contributions are expected to pass through designated party accounts, while candidates will be required to disclose funding sources and campaign-related financial transactions at the appropriate levels of the party structure.
Supporters of the policy argue that it will strengthen transparency and reduce opportunities for financial disputes, while critics say its implementation will require careful management to avoid internal tensions.
Reactions Trail the Statement
The statement has sparked mixed reactions across social media platforms and political discussion forums.
While some party supporters welcomed the emphasis on discipline, accountability, and institutional development, others expressed concerns that overly rigid control of independent support groups could affect the coalition-building efforts needed ahead of future elections.
For many observers, the statement appears to mark the NDC’s determination to establish clear boundaries between party authority and the activities of support movements operating within its political orbit.
As discussions continue, political analysts say the success of the new approach will depend largely on the party’s ability to balance internal discipline with inclusiveness and broad-based political mobilization.
