Tinubu-Obi Debate Challenge Sparks Online Reactions as Lawyer Vows to Surrender Law Certificate
A Nigerian lawyer, Barrister Stephen Emele, has stirred conversations across social media after publicly declaring that he is willing to surrender his law certificate if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu personally agrees to participate in a direct presidential debate with former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
In a viral social media post, Emele argued that leaders seeking to govern a people should be prepared to directly engage citizens and defend their policies, achievements, and vision before the electorate.
According to him, democratic accountability requires political leaders to personally communicate with the people rather than relying solely on media aides, spokespersons, or online supporters to speak on their behalf.
“I am ready to surrender my law certificate if President Tinubu himself will agree to do a presidential debate with Peter Obi on either Arise TV or Channels Television,” Emele stated.
The lawyer further maintained that public debates are a hallmark of mature democracies, where candidates and elected leaders are expected to answer questions directly and persuade voters through ideas, policies, and performance.
His comments have since generated mixed reactions online.
How Nigerians Are Reacting
Supporters of the proposal argue that a public debate between President Tinubu and Peter Obi would provide Nigerians with an opportunity to hear directly from two of the country’s most prominent political figures on issues such as the economy, security, governance, and national development.
Others believe such a debate could strengthen democratic culture by promoting transparency and accountability.
However, critics of the idea argue that presidential debates are traditionally conducted during election campaigns rather than after candidates have assumed office. Some also contend that governance should be evaluated through policies, results, and institutional processes rather than media appearances.
A number of commentators noted that while debates can be valuable, they should not be viewed as the sole measure of leadership effectiveness.
The Bigger Democratic Question
The debate challenge has once again revived discussions about political communication and public accountability in Nigeria.
It raises broader questions about how elected leaders should engage citizens, respond to criticism, and communicate policy decisions in an increasingly digital and politically active society.
Whether or not such a debate ever takes place, the controversy highlights the continued public interest in direct engagement between political leaders and the Nigerian people.
As discussions continue online, many observers believe the real issue extends beyond a Tinubu-Obi face-off and touches on the larger need for open dialogue, transparency, and democratic participation in Nigeria’s governance process.
