The Plateau State Tourism Corporation has raised the alarm over repeated incidents of suspected herders allegedly sneaking cattle into the Jos Wildlife Park at night for illegal grazing, prompting authorities to strengthen security measures across the conservation area.

According to a public announcement issued by the corporation, the suspected herders reportedly gain access to the park between 8:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., taking advantage of periods when fewer park personnel are on duty.

The management further alleged that the intruders enter the park through water channels and by breaking padlocks on gates located along the park’s western boundary near the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) Headquarters.

Security Measures Introduced

In response to the reported security breaches, the Plateau State Tourism Corporation announced several immediate measures aimed at protecting the wildlife reserve and preventing further illegal activities.

The measures include:

-Temporary closure of all pedestrian entry points into the park,

-Intensification of security patrols across the facility,

-Joint security operations involving the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to arrest and prosecute offenders and

Reinforcement of vulnerable access points to prevent unauthorized entry.

The corporation also disclosed that arrests and prosecutions of suspected herders and illegal miners have already been carried out in previous operations, reaffirming its commitment to enforcing the law within the protected area.

Governor Mutfwang Backs Long-Term Protection

The management stated that Governor Caleb Mutfwang is supporting efforts to implement lasting security measures that will safeguard the Jos Wildlife Park and preserve it as one of Plateau State’s most important environmental and tourism assets.

Officials emphasized that additional interventions are being developed to strengthen the park’s long-term protection against encroachment and other illegal activities.

Residents Urged to Remain Vigilant
The Tourism Corporation commended residents of nearby communities, particularly those in Dong Kassa, for their vigilance and cooperation.

Members of the public have been encouraged to promptly report any suspicious movements or activities around the park to the appropriate authorities.

The corporation reminded residents that Jos Wildlife Park is a vital state asset that must be protected for future generations, calling on citizens to support ongoing conservation and security efforts.
