UNIJOS Student Killing: Police Explain What Will Happen to The Student Who Filmed Mob Attack

UNIJOS Student Killing

The Plateau State Police Command has explained why the student who recorded the brutal mob attack that led to the death of a University of Jos (UNIJOS) student, popularly known as Ibee, may also face prosecution.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO) said the individual who filmed the incident could be considered part of the alleged crime if investigations establish that he had the opportunity to alert authorities or intervene but instead chose to record the assault.

According to the police spokesperson, merely claiming that he did not physically participate in the beating does not automatically absolve him of responsibility if evidence shows he knowingly watched the attack unfold without making any effort to report it.

“The cameraman had the ability to report the incident or seek help. Choosing to stand by and record instead of taking reasonable steps to alert authorities could make him part of the crime,” the police said.

The clarification comes amid widespread debate on social media, where Nigerians have been divided over the role of the cameraman. While some argued that the video served as crucial digital evidence that could help investigators identify those responsible, others insisted that recording the attack without attempting to stop it or report it amounted to complicity.

The police said the matter would ultimately be determined through ongoing investigations and in accordance with the law, stressing that anyone found to have aided, encouraged, or failed to act where legally required could face appropriate legal consequences.

The killing of the UNIJOS student has sparked nationwide outrage, with renewed calls for justice and stronger action against mob violence and jungle justice across Nigeria.
