NDC Ward Chairman Killed in Benue After Alleged Attack in Makurdi
Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Fiidi Council Ward, Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State, has died following an alleged attack by unknown assailants.
Terhemen was reportedly found unconscious in a bush near his residence around the NNPC Depot along the Makurdi-Otukpo Road in the early hours of Wednesday, September 30, after he failed to return home the previous night.
According to accounts cited by Nigerian media, Terhemen had left his residence on Tuesday evening to watch a local football match in the Kanshio area of Makurdi.
When he did not return home, friends and relatives reportedly began searching for him. He was later found at about 2am in an unconscious state.
He reportedly died before he could receive medical attention.
NDC alleges suspected poisoning
The Benue State chapter of the NDC alleged that Terhemen had been attacked by suspected hoodlums, tied with ropes and injected with a substance suspected to be poisonous before being abandoned.
A friend of the deceased, who spoke anonymously, also reportedly said a needle-like injury was noticed on his body. His mobile phone was said to have remained with him.
However, the circumstances surrounding the alleged injection and the exact cause of death have not been independently established by security authorities.
The Benue State Police Command also said it had not received a formal report on the incident at the time of the initial reports.
NDC demands investigation
The NDC State Chairman, Ohini Ojegbe, condemned the killing and called on security agencies to urgently investigate the circumstances surrounding Terhemen’s death.
Ojegbe described the incident as a “broad-daylight evil” and urged the authorities to identify and arrest those responsible.
The party’s State Publicity Secretary, Agile Bem, described Terhemen as a committed and dedicated member whose contribution to the growth of the NDC would be greatly missed.
The party also expressed condolences to Terhemen’s immediate family, the Fiidi community and members of the NDC in Benue State.
What remains unclear
At the time of publication, the motive for the alleged attack, the identity of the perpetrators and the precise cause of Terhemen’s death remained unclear.
The allegation that he was injected with a poisonous substance will require confirmation from medical and investigative authorities.
The incident has nevertheless raised fresh concerns about security in Makurdi, particularly as political parties continue preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This report is based on accounts from the NDC, people cited in initial reports and reports by Nigerian media organisations.
Claims about the alleged injection and the precise cause of death have not been independently confirmed by the police and are therefore presented as allegations pending investigation.
