Voting commenced across Osun State on Saturday amid reports of isolated incidents as residents headed to the polls to elect a governor for the next four years.
At AUD Primary School, Atile, Ikire, in Irewole Local Government Area, an Accord Party agent, Ajayi Ayodele, alleged that agents of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were monitoring voters while they cast their ballots.
Ayodele claimed the action could undermine the secrecy of the ballot and compromise the integrity of the voting process.
As of the time of filing this report, the allegation had not been independently verified, while APC officials had not issued an immediate response.
The development came as leading governorship candidates exercised their civic rights in their respective polling units across the state.
Incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, the Accord Party candidate seeking re-election, cast his vote in Ede North Local Government Area and expressed confidence in the electoral process.
Reports from his polling unit indicated an orderly accreditation and voting exercise.
The APC candidate, Senator Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO), also voted at his polling unit, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Salaam, cast his ballot in his home constituency as voting continued across the state.
The three candidates are widely regarded as the leading contenders in the keenly contested governorship race.
Across many polling units visited by observers and journalists, voting commenced peacefully with the presence of security personnel and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
However, reports of complaints, allegations and minor disruptions emerged from some locations, underscoring the tense political atmosphere surrounding the election.
With more than 2.3 million registered voters and over 1.9 million collected Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), the Osun governorship election is being closely watched nationwide as the last major off-cycle governorship poll before the 2027 general elections.
