How Politicians Allegedly Infiltrate NYSC List, Sew Uniforms for Impostors to Rig Elections — Mike Igini
Former INEC official Mike Igini has raised concerns over alleged attempts by politicians to compromise Nigeria’s electoral process by infiltrating the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) list with fake identities and deploying impostors as polling officials.
According to Igini, politicians allegedly arrange NYSC uniforms for these individuals, enabling them to pose as corps members and participate in election duties at polling units.
“The list is usually infiltrated… They would bring in people, sew NYSC uniform for them. So what you find at the polling unit are people actually submitted through compromise to our own staff to conduct election at the level of the polling unit,” Igini reportedly said.
His remarks have drawn attention to concerns about the verification of polling officials and the safeguards needed to protect the credibility of Nigeria’s elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
If established, such practices could undermine public confidence in the electoral process and raise questions about the effectiveness of existing mechanisms for identifying and deploying legitimate polling officials.
Igini’s allegations underscore the importance of transparent recruitment, rigorous identity verification and stronger safeguards to prevent unauthorised individuals from participating in election administration.
INEC and the NYSC have important roles in ensuring that election personnel are properly identified and that only duly authorised officials are deployed to polling units.
