…Urge residents to pray for peace, unity and stability in states, nation

Governors of Lagos and Oyo States have declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a public holiday in honour of this year’s Isese Day, a festival devoted to preserving and promoting Yoruba traditional religion and culture.

In Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde approved the work-free day, with the announcement contained in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Olanike Adeyemo, and released on Monday through the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju.

Governor Makinde called on residents to seize the occasion to pray for peace, unity, and stability, not only in Oyo State but across Nigeria, stressing that cultural observances remain a vital force in strengthening social cohesion and shaping collective identity.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State also directed that the same date be observed as a public holiday for workers in the state.

The order, conveyed through a circular issued by the Head of Service, Huiel Bode Agoro, applies to all public servants. It ensures that government offices in Lagos will be closed while residents take part in the cultural festivities.

Isese Day, commemorated annually across several South-Western states, is dedicated to celebrating Yoruba heritage, traditional religion, and rituals that pay tribute to ancestral practices and spiritual values.

Officials in both states underscored that the holiday offers a moment to reflect on cultural identity, promote communal harmony, and reinforce society’s commitment to peace and stability.
