Peter Obi has officially emerged as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election, becoming one of the earliest major contenders to secure a presidential ticket ahead of the polls.
Obi was confirmed as the NDC flag bearer on Saturday following the party’s nomination process, marking a significant milestone in the build-up to the 2027 presidential race.
His emergence comes after his departure from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alongside former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and other political associates, amid internal disagreements and legal disputes within the party.
In a move that has already generated political discussions across the country, Obi immediately announced Kwankwaso as his running mate, making the NDC ticket the first among the major political parties and presidential contenders to unveil a vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
The announcement signals an early attempt by the NDC to present a united front and consolidate support across different regions of the country.
With Obi from the South-East and Kwankwaso commanding significant influence in the North, the party hopes to build a broad national coalition ahead of the election.
Political analysts say the early unveiling of a running mate could give the NDC an advantage in campaign planning, grassroots mobilization, and voter engagement, while other parties are still consulting on their presidential tickets.
As preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum, the Obi-Kwankwaso partnership is expected to remain a major talking point in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
