Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, on Sunday walked out of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship screening venue in Abuja amid visible tension, refusing to address journalists after the exercise.

A Headlineswave.ng reporter present at the venue observed that the governor appeared visibly upset as he exited the screening hall at the Plateau Governor’s Lodge in Abuja shortly after the closed-door session.

Fubara arrived at the venue around 3pm after missing the earlier screening schedule that included several incumbent governors seeking re-election on the platform of the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Unlike other governors screened before him, members of the screening committee did not escort the Rivers governor out of the hall after the exercise — a development that immediately sparked speculation among party supporters and political observers gathered outside the venue.

When approached by journalists who had waited for hours to speak with him, Fubara briefly responded, “No comment,” before entering his vehicle and leaving the premises.

The screening session was reportedly presided over by the APC Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Dalori.

The development comes amid the lingering political tensions between Fubara and his estranged political ally, Nyesom Wike, whose influence in Rivers State politics has continued to dominate public discourse.

There have also been growing speculations over possible alignments and counter-alignments within the Rivers APC structure ahead of the next governorship election, although no official statement has been issued by the party regarding the outcome of Fubara’s screening.

Speaking earlier on the exercise, APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, had dismissed concerns surrounding the absence of some governors from the initial screening schedule, explaining that official state engagements could affect attendance timing.

Similarly, APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, told journalists that the screening process was still ongoing and that the committee would issue its official report after meeting with all aspirants.

As of the time of filing this report, the APC screening committee had not officially disclosed the final status of Governor Fubara’s screening outcome.

Political observers say the coming days may reveal more about the governor’s standing within the ruling party and the future direction of Rivers State politics ahead of 2027.
