A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sentenced former Nigerian Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, to 75 years imprisonment over a massive ₦33.8 billion fraud linked to the Mambilla and Zungeru hydroelectric power projects.

The judgment was delivered on Wednesday by Justice James Omotosho after the court found the former minister guilty on all 12 counts bordering on money laundering, conspiracy, and diversion of public funds.

According to court findings, the funds were allegedly diverted through private companies under the guise of executing key power infrastructure projects intended to improve electricity supply across Nigeria.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) prosecuted the case, accusing Mamman of laundering proceeds tied to government-financed hydroelectric contracts.

Justice Omotosho ruled that the prison terms attached to each count would run consecutively, bringing the total sentence to 75 years.

The judge also ordered that the sentence should begin from the day the former minister is arrested, as he was reportedly absent during sentencing.

Security agencies, including international authorities, were directed to locate and apprehend him.

How The Fraud Happened

The EFCC alleged that the diverted funds were originally earmarked for critical electricity projects, especially the Mambilla and Zungeru hydropower schemes – projects considered strategic to solving Nigeria’s long-standing electricity challenges.

Investigators said billions of naira meant for the projects were moved through multiple corporate accounts and allegedly converted for personal use.

Rare Conviction In Nigeria’s Anti-Corruption Fight

The conviction is already being described as one of the most significant anti-corruption judgments involving a former cabinet member in recent years.

Nigeria has faced persistent criticism over high-profile corruption cases that often drag on for years without convictions.

Analysts say the judgment could signal tougher enforcement against public officials accused of financial crimes.

Who Is Saleh Mamman?

Saleh Mamman served as Minister of Power under former President Muhammadu Buhari between 2019 and 2021 before leaving office during a cabinet reshuffle.

He had been under investigation for alleged financial misconduct connected to major electricity projects.

The case continues to generate nationwide reactions, especially among Nigerians frustrated by poor electricity supply despite repeated government investments in the power sector.
