Gov Yusuf seeks law to ban same-sex marriage, homosexual practices

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the transmission of a bill to the State House of Assembly seeking to outlaw same-sex marriage and other practices the government considers immoral.

The approval was given at the 31st State Executive Council meeting presided over by the governor at Government House Annex, Kwankwasiyya City, Kano.

In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor declared that his administration would not compromise the values and teachings of Islam, stressing that Kano must uphold its cultural and religious heritage.

The proposed law specifically prohibits same-sex marriage as well as practices locally referred to as Madigo (lesbianism) and Luwadi (homosexuality).

“Under no circumstances will we allow acts that contradict our religion and traditions to take root in Kano. This government is duty-bound to protect the moral integrity of our society,” Governor Yusuf warned.

Once passed by the Assembly, offenders found guilty of engaging in or promoting same-sex marriage and related practices will face strict legal consequences.
