The Rotary Club of Jos Central, on Saturday, planted 200 trees at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) TV College in Jos to mitigate adverse effects of climate change.
The club’s president, Mr Chris Nwanebo, said the gesture was part of the club’s mandate for environmental sustainability and green environmental improvement.
Nwanebo said the tree seedlings planted, if nurtured to maturity, would promote urban greening, enhance air quality, and support climate resilience in the college and its environs.
“These trees improve the air quality, as they absorb pollutants like carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide, and release oxygen.
“The tree roots help in binding the soil, thereby preventing erosion. Trees also provide shade and reduce water evaporation from the soil, while also providing biodiversity,” he said.
The club president appealed to the management of the college to ensure that the trees were nurtured to maturity.
Responding, Ms Pauline Suleiman, Rector, NTA TV College, Jos, commended rotary for the initiative and for choosing the college for the project.
Suleiman said the gesture was a great feat for the college and its host community, as the trees would serve as windbreakers and would also purify the air in the environment.
She assured the club that the 200 tree seedlings would be nurtured to maturity.
News Men report that the tree seedlings planted consist of economic tree seedlings such as cashew, neem, and mahogany, amongst others.
