Former Labour Party presidential campaign spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, has reacted to reports that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, filed a ₦5 billion defamation lawsuit against him.
Okonkwo, who recently criticized Obi and the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), described the legal action as an attempt to silence him and insisted that he was prepared to defend his statements in court.
According to a statement shared on his social media platforms, Okonkwo said he became aware of a letter allegedly sent by Obi’s legal team demanding ₦5 billion in damages over comments he made concerning the former Anambra State governor.
“I have been informed that there is a letter circulating online from Peter Obi and his lawyers asking me to pay ₦5 billion,” Okonkwo stated.
The former actor-turned-politician further claimed that he had personally financed some campaign-related expenses during his time as Obi’s spokesperson in the 2023 presidential election campaign.
Okonkwo Claims He Possesses Additional Information
Okonkwo also suggested that he possesses information obtained during his period as Obi’s spokesperson but has refrained from making it public.
He warned that if the case proceeds to court, he may be compelled to disclose information that he has so far kept confidential.
According to him, his decision not to reveal such information in the past was based on personal principles rather than a lack of evidence.
Challenges Obi to Pursue Case in Court
The former Labour Party chieftain challenged Obi and his legal team to proceed with the lawsuit, expressing confidence that he would successfully defend himself.
