The Nigerian military on Friday held special prayers at the Giginya Military Barracks in Sokoto as part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

The prayer session, conducted in a solemn atmosphere, was led by the Chief Imam of Giginya Barracks, Major Tanimu Hamisu Kauru, and attended by officers, soldiers and other ranks.

Major Kauru said the prayers were offered for Nigerian service personnel who lost their lives in the course of defending the country, as well as for the safety and strength of troops currently serving across different theatres of operation.

He described Armed Forces Remembrance Day as an important national observance dedicated to honouring the sacrifices of military personnel who died in the line of duty, particularly in the fight against insurgency, banditry and other security threats.

The cleric urged serving personnel to remain committed to discipline, professionalism and national service, noting that the sacrifices of fallen heroes should serve as a reminder of the responsibility placed on members of the Armed Forces.

Prayers were also offered for peace and security in the country, with calls for continued public support for the military.

The session featured Qur’anic recitations and moments of silent prayers for deceased servicemen and women.
