The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), in collaboration with Sahel Consulting, the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI), and the Gates Foundation, has launched a transformative initiative to improve access to climate information in Nigeria.

The Enhancing National Climate Services (ENACTS) program, unveiled during a two-day event in Abuja, is designed to provide actionable climate data to a wide range of sectors, from agriculture to disaster management.

The initiative’s cornerstone is the new NiMet Maproom portal, an online platform that integrates ground-based observations with satellite data to offer more than 40 years of high-resolution climate information. The portal’s interactive tools allow users to analyze and visualize data at a granular 4km grid resolution, empowering them to make evidence-based decisions.

During his keynote address, NiMet’s Director-General, Professor Charles Anosike, described the launch as “a vision brought to life through consistency, partnership, and a shared commitment to national development.”

He emphasized that ENACTS represents a “transformative step in making climate information accessible, relevant, and actionable for all Nigerians.”

Prof. Anosike highlighted the platform’s direct impact on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for food security. He explained that by providing farmers with precise information on rainfall patterns, temperature forecasts, and drought risks, the Maproom will help them make climate-smart decisions to boost crop yields and protect their livelihoods.

The ENACTS initiative is also expected to strengthen national resilience and enhance early warning systems against climate-related disasters.

Stakeholders at the project’s review workshop expressed optimism that the new platform would not only bridge Nigeria’s climate information gap but also catalyze innovation and improve service delivery in climate-sensitive sectors across the country.
