Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has revealed details of his closed-door meeting with the party’s National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, as both leaders moved to calm growing concerns over an alleged rift between the party leadership and Obi’s supporters.
The meeting, which also involved NDC vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso, came amid reports of internal disagreements within the fast-growing opposition party.
In a statement released on Friday, Obi said the discussions focused on strengthening unity within the NDC and advancing the party’s vision of national transformation ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to him, despite being barely four months old, the NDC remains “the party of the future” and is determined to overcome its challenges through dialogue, sacrifice and mutual respect among members.
“The leaders and members of a committed political family must be willing to make sacrifices and show tolerance and accommodation, even in difficult circumstances,” Obi stated.
He stressed that trust, unity and a shared commitment to national development are essential to sustaining the party’s momentum and achieving its political objectives.
The disclosure came shortly after Dickson confirmed that he held extensive consultations with Obi and other stakeholders over issues that had generated concern among party members and supporters.
According to the former Bayelsa State governor, all matters discussed during the meeting were amicably resolved.
Dickson also dismissed reports suggesting a breakdown in relations between the party leadership and Obidients, insisting that continuous engagement and consultation remain the hallmark of the NDC.
In a further effort to dismiss claims of internal crisis, the NDC declared that its focus remains firmly on winning the presidency in 2027.
“There are no issues in the NDC. We are focused on taking Aso Rock,” the party stated through its verified social media platform.
The coordinated messages from Obi, Dickson and the NDC leadership appear aimed at reassuring supporters that the party remains united despite recent controversies and differing opinions within its ranks.
Political observers believe the public show of solidarity is crucial as the party seeks to consolidate support and strengthen its position as a major opposition force ahead of the next presidential election.
Why This Matters
The meeting represents the strongest indication yet that the NDC leadership is working to prevent internal disagreements from escalating into a full-blown crisis.
With 2027 still ahead, party leaders appear keen on presenting a united front while keeping supporters focused on their broader political objective.
