Abraka community in Ethiope-East Local Government Area of Delta State has been thrown into turmoil following the alleged killing of a pregnant woman by soldiers attached to Operation Delta Sweep, who were pursuing suspected internet fraudsters.
The fatal shooting occurred on Saturday evening and triggered a wave of protests by residents, students, and indigenes of the university town, who accused the troops of gross misconduct and recklessness.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the soldiers had attempted to stop the suspects, but the men reportedly ignored their orders and sped away. The soldiers gave chase and allegedly fired several rounds as they pursued the fleeing vehicle.
One of the stray bullets struck the pregnant woman, who was said to be uninvolved in the incident. Witnesses claimed she died on the spot before any attempt could be made to take her to a hospital.
Her death sparked immediate outrage. Protesters poured into the streets of Abraka, blocking roads and demanding justice for the victim, as well as accountability from the security operatives involved in the shooting.
