A Nigerian student, Kareem Faizal Gbolahan, has been declared wanted by community leaders and powerful political figures in Kwara State after allegations of a same-sex relationship led to mob violence, the death of a fellow student, and a chain of attacks on his family.
Kareem, a 19-year-old undergraduate of Environmental Health Science at Kwara State University, Ilorin, was accused of engaging in a homosexual relationship with his coursemate, Quadri Adisa, a devout Muslim from a prominent Nupe family.
The affair, which reportedly began in secret during night study sessions, became public in June 2023 when hostel neighbours overheard the duo during an encounter and forced their way into the room.
The students were chased by an angry mob, but while Kareem managed to escape, Quadri was caught and beaten severely. He later died in hospital after sustaining fatal injuries.
The death sparked outrage in Ilorin, with Quadri’s influential relatives demanding that Kareem be produced to face both Sharia law and the Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act, which criminalises homosexuality in Nigeria. Any information that can lead to his whereabouts will be highly appreciate
