The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued an official clarification following reports alleging that its National Legal Adviser, Reuben Egwuaba, is simultaneously serving in the same capacity for another political party.

Earlier claims, which circulated widely online, suggested that Egwuaba’s name appeared as National Legal Adviser for both the NDC and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) on the portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The development had raised concerns about a possible conflict of interest and compliance with Nigeria’s electoral laws.
NDC Breaks Silence
In a swift response shared via its official handle, @NigeriaNDCHQ, the party dismissed the allegation, stating that Reuben Egwuaba is no longer its Legal Adviser.
According to the NDC:
Egwuaba resigned from the position in 2025. The party released documented evidence of his resignation and maintained that the continued listing on INEC’s portal is due to failure to update records by the commission.
The party emphasized that the issue is administrative, not structural, and does not reflect its current leadership composition.
Blame Shifts to INEC
The clarification shifts attention to INEC’s record management, with the NDC urging the electoral body to update its database to reflect accurate party information.
As of the time of this report, INEC has not issued any official statement addressing the discrepancy.
Legal Concerns Ease — But Questions Remain
With the NDC’s explanation, initial fears of a direct legal conflict may have been eased.
However, the situation still raises broader concerns about accuracy of official electoral records, timeliness of institutional updates and potential implications for public trust
Political observers say such discrepancies, if not promptly corrected, could create avoidable confusion in Nigeria’s political space, especially ahead of major electoral activities.
