Abuja witnessed a dramatic scene on Monday, January 26, 2026, as striking workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) chased the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, out of the FCTA Secretariat during an escalating labour protest.

The incident occurred amid an ongoing indefinite strike by FCTA workers over unresolved welfare issues, unpaid entitlements, and the alleged failure of the FCT administration to honour previous agreements with labour unions.

Eyewitnesses said tension heightened when news filtered through the protesting workers that the minister was about to leave the secretariat.

The crowd reportedly surged toward his convoy, chanting derisive slogans, including “Catch am, catch am, Wike is running, ole ole,” as security operatives hurriedly escorted him out of the premises.

Multiple videos that later surfaced on social media showed workers running after the minister’s convoy as he exited through a back gate of the secretariat, a move sources said was taken to avoid direct confrontation and ensure his safety.

Union sources confirmed that the protest was organised by FCTA workers in collaboration with labour unions, who accused the minister of insensitivity to their plight despite repeated notices and negotiations.

Although no injuries were reported, the incident underscored the growing tension between the FCT administration and its workforce. As of press time, the office of the FCT Minister had not issued an official statement on the incident.

Labour leaders warned that the strike would continue and may intensify if the government fails to urgently address the workers’ demands, while the development has continued to generate strong reactions across social and political circles nationwide.
