For George Ilenikhena, the invitation to Nigeria’s senior national team represents another step in a rapidly developing football career.
The 20-year-old striker has earned his first Super Eagles call-up after making an impression at Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad.
The Lagos-born forward previously played for Amiens, Royal Antwerp and Monaco before moving to Saudi Arabia.

Now he has an opportunity to introduce himself to Nigerian football supporters at senior international level.
Ilenikhena has been included in Éric Chelle’s 24-man squad for Nigeria’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
The youngster has not hidden his ambition.
He says he wants to win major honours with the Super Eagles and intends to use his opportunity to demonstrate what he can contribute.
The challenge, however, is significant.
Nigeria already has established attacking options, including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon and others.
For Ilenikhena, the first objective is therefore not to carry the team but to learn, compete and make the most of whatever opportunity comes his way.
His call-up also reflects the continuing search for the next generation of Nigerian international stars.
Whether he becomes a regular will depend on performances, consistency and opportunities.
