Troops Rescue Plateau District Head After Attack in Jos East
Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued the district head of Fursum in Jos East Local Government Area of Plateau State after youths reportedly attacked his residence in Ninseng community.
The incident occurred at about 1:45pm on Friday, September 25, according to security sources cited by TheCable.
The district head, Musa Usman, reportedly sustained injuries during the incident and was taken to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) for treatment.
His vehicle was also reportedly set ablaze during the attack.
The incident was said to have followed the killing of a resident at an illegal mining site in nearby Nabar Dutse community.
Security sources said the youths accused the district head of supporting Fulani residents in the community before the attack.
Troops from Sector 1, Sub-Sector 12 reportedly responded to a distress call, brought the situation under control and secured the area to prevent further violence.
The development is significant because of the potential for individual incidents involving community leaders to trigger wider tension or reprisals in already-sensitive areas.
Security forces were said to have remained in the community to help maintain calm and prevent further escalation.
