Political activist and senatorial aspirant, Aisha Yesufu, has explained why she decided to contest for the Senate seat representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Sunday, Yesufu said her ambition is aimed at providing residents of Abuja with what she described as a credible and inspiring political alternative.

According to her, part of her motivation is to help strengthen opposition politics in the nation’s capital and mobilise voters ahead of the 2027 polls.

“But most importantly, part of the reason I am running for the senatorial seat is also to ensure that we are locking down Abuja , that we have a candidate who can resonate with and inspire passion among the people, a candidate that the Abuja residents will see and feel proud of, and will want to come out for,” she stated during the interview.

Yesufu added that voters in the FCT deserve a candidate they can identify with and passionately support.

The activist, who is also a known supporter of Peter Obi, is seeking the senatorial ticket of the Nigerian Democratic Congress ahead of the party primaries expected later this month.

She also dismissed concerns that her senatorial ambition could affect her support for Obi’s political movement, insisting that she remains committed to backing the former presidential candidate while simultaneously building her own political structure in Abuja.

Political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections have continued to gather momentum across Nigeria, with several politicians and activists already declaring interest in various elective positions.
