Prominent Nigerian cleric, Prophet Isa El-Buba, has reportedly withdrawn his support for former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

He has subsequently thrown his weight behind the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to a statement cited by Headlineswave.ng on Wednesday, El-Buba said his decision was based on his conviction that Adebayo possesses a better vision for addressing Nigeria’s challenges and repositioning the country for sustainable development.

The cleric expressed concern over the worsening socio-economic conditions in the country, noting that millions of Nigerians continue to struggle with insecurity, unemployment, poverty, and social injustice despite the nation’s enormous human and natural resources.

According to him, years of poor leadership have denied many citizens, particularly young people, opportunities for quality education, economic empowerment, and national prosperity.

El-Buba also warned against the emergence of a one-party state, arguing that democracy can only thrive where there is justice, fairness, and healthy political competition.

“Nigeria cannot go into a one-party state. Every system survives by justice and equity. Oppression is never the pathway to stability, and peace cannot thrive in the midst of injustice,” he was quoted as saying.

The cleric further stated that Nigeria needs a new direction and called on citizens to unite in rewriting the nation’s history through responsible leadership and governance.

His reported endorsement of Adebayo has sparked debate among political observers and supporters of various political parties, with reactions ranging from support for his position to skepticism about the reported shift.

The development comes as political realignments and coalition discussions continue to gain momentum ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

As of the time of this report, neither Peter Obi nor Prince Adewole Adebayo had issued an official response to El-Buba’s reported declaration.
